Ottawa – Farm groups have released a four-point plan they want the federal and provincial agriculture ministers to act on during their annual summer meeting to better help farmers cope with weather and trade challenges.
An overhaul of BRM was launched at the ministers’ 2016 meeting and progress has been made, says AgGrowth Coalition Chairman Markus Haerle. However the time has come for meaningful action on the deliberations by farm groups and government representatives.
During the ministers’ meeting later this month in Quebec City, the Coalition wants:
–AgriStability coverage immediately adjusted to cover losses starting at 85 per cent reference margins with no Reference Margin Limits;
–The prioritization of discussions on production insurance for livestock and horticulture crops not currently covered under AgriInsurance;
–Discussions on BRM programming options to be meaningful and focussed on program effectiveness rather than funding levels.
