Growing up on a farm north of Seaforth and working in a family operated greenhouse has led Claire Roest to open up her own business.

As one of Goderich’s newest budding businesses, Birch Creek Greenhouse offers home grown plants and arrangements.

Roest’s initial interest in the floral business began after essentially growing up in a family-operated greenhouse run by Bert and Carol Reinink. It was only a matter of time before she started her own business.

“In high school I did a co-op placement at Cooke’s Florist in Clinton and this is what sparked my interest in floral design,” says Roest.

She then went on to Seneca College and after graduating with high honours in the Floral Design program Roest managed and ran her first ‘pop-up’ greenhouse in Seaforth.

Shortly after graduation, Roest was hired at Luann’s Flowers in Goderich and became a full time designed for six and a half years.

“With experience under my belt, my husband and I felt ready to take the next step and start my dream of being a business owner,” admits Roest.

Combining her knowledge and experience from working in her parents’ greenhouse while growing up and her floral design creativity, Roest believed it was only logical to combine the best of both those worlds.

“We started our growing season back in February and are proud to say everything is home grown, or at the very least very locally grown,” says Roest.

Birch Creek Greenhouse specializes in annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, custom pots and wedding and event florals.

“I love designing and creating with different colours, textures and thinking outside the box to keep things interesting,” Roest says.

“It’s simply the best feeling seeing clients happy with their wedding flowers or custom planters that we create for them.”

Roest says that without the support of her husband and family, she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to follow a passion and open her own business.
