Meatless burgers are on a roller coaster ride.

Fast food chains fell over each other adding veggie burgers to their menus in August, particularly Beyond Meat’s products.

But things changed last week when Tim Horton’s Canada dropped Beyond Meat patties and sausages from its breakfast menus in all but British Columbia and Ontario.

Whether it’s coincidence or short sellers playing games with share prices, Beyond Meat’s share price tumbled from a peak of $154 US to below $147 in one day last week.

But while Tim Horton’s was dropping Beyond Meat products, A&W added them to its Canadian-stores menus.

So far McDonald’s Restaurants is one of the few big fast food chains to resist the temptation to add Beyond Meat products to its menus.

In the early going, Beyond Meat products seemed to hold appeal as vegetarian, low-calorie and environmentally preferable to beef because of methane greenhouse gases cattle emit.

But more recently, there have been concerns expressed about the number of additives and ingredients used to make the Beyond Meat products and calorie counts about as high as beef.
