The MOU approach is favoured
The Chicken Farmers of Ontario marketing board is asking the province to deal with animal welfare by a memorandum of understanding outlining standards.
Chairman Ed Benjamins said the memorandum-of-understanding approach has worked on other issues and the marketing board is willing to adopt and enforce standards.
The discussions with the government come in the wake of the decision by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to stop inspection and enforcement on farms.
The society said it can no longer afford to provide the service.
